Shared Hosting Limitations

April 26th, 2009

Known issues with shared hosting.

Hosting your websites on a shared account, like Hostgator, is a great way to start out. The shared platform offers great value for money, and offers most of the features that even a dedicated package can give you, but there is one major drawback, your neighbors.

Imagine in an apartment block, and you all use the same hot water, every time you go to have a shower, someone in apartment 28 is running the tub, another in apartment 65 is using the washing machine, and you are at the top of the block, waiting for the hot water feed. This is the same situation that people find with bandwidth, and server resources when using shared hosing.

Some web scripts are extremely resource hungry, and can run, almost permanently, to the detriment of all the other websites on the server. Your page may appear to load quickly when you view your site, but a couple of seconds later, the load times could increase 500%, and you would be completely unaware of this.

There is also the spam complaint scenario. Imagine someone in your apartments making crank telephone calls, the feds are trying to pinpoint the source, and they have narrowed the search down to your block, but cannot yet pinpoint the true source. What happens then? You are then monitored, along with all your neighbors, all because of one crank.

Your sites IP address.

Each server has an IP address, like 123.456.123.44, this is the identifier of your server, and your website can be found at this address, but so can everybody else with that same IP, and there could easily be 10’s of thousands.

When a spam complaint is received, the authorities take this matter seriously, and they inform several services about this spam breach. Many services then take action to punish the spammer, and the easiest way to limit their actions is to ban the IP address, your site gets targeted by association.

The same thing can happen by others on your server hosting viruses, hosting illegal files, or simply posting immoral content.

Can your website afford to be exposed to this kind of risk?

If your site is just a family page, or a welcoming blog, then it shouldn’t make any difference, but if you are involved in any form of e-commerce, or have an email list of contacts, the there may be trouble ahead using a shared hosting account.

The alternatives are often more expensive, were you would need to go for a full dedicated server, with your own SSL certificate, but the more cost concious among you should take a look at VectorLevel, where your account is automatically assigned a unique IP address, giving virtual shared hosting, for the price of shared hosting.

Affordable Shared Virtual Managed Hosting

March 22nd, 2009

A new player has entered the hosting market with a mix of many flavors.

Vector Level Hosting offers a managed system of virtual hosting, on a shared hosting platform. This next generation form of web host has responded to the squeeze on the market place through recessionary times.

With a price point similar to normal shared packages, this virtual entry system has ticked all the boxes when it comes to performance and value for money.

They have moved away from the cpanel setup, with a back office that has all the same features, but a much smaller load on the server.

The direct admin back office
The direct admin back office

Uptime is a guaranteed 99.9% and better.

The support is very quick and dedicated, I opened an account with the biggest package, and a dedicated IP for just $23 a month!

Couple the performance with the SSL and I think I’ve just found one of the best hosts around.

Keep an eye out for these guys!

What Is Shared Hosting?

February 22nd, 2009

Is Shared Hosting Safe?

Whenever a website is accessible to display on the Internet, webhosting is the means of storing, and computing all the information, and files that enable site visitors to see, and operate a website in their web browsers. You have access to your part of a shared web hosting server, just like on your home computer, you can install programs that you assign user rights to, other people cannot access your files.

The decision on whether to use a dedicated web hosting service or a shared web hosting service is really up to each individual and depends on several factors. As a good rule of thumb, hosting a website, or blog that has no massive bandwidth limitations, should be absolutely fine with a shared account.

Every website has an IP address, like 222.99.88.55, these indicate the whereabouts of your internet address in number form, they enable you to find any website, most people are used to a domain name, and domains are attached to the IP address by a process called DNS.

Your shared account is one section of hard drive space, on a computer called a web server, this server can be anywhere, but will be more efficient if hosted locally, like the US, UK, or Australia. With 24-7 access being the biggest requirement, server downtime is a cause for concern, and uptimes in excess of 99.9% should be sought.

Your website is only as secure as your host, holes and exploits need to be patched quickly bu your hosting company, to ensure the high level of security that you deserve. Your website stats are a key to running a good site, cpanel provides a range of stats with data that updates daily. From the latest visitors, including geo location, searchphrase used, and time spent on any given page, these stats are a goldmine to the website owner.

Your webhosts servers are permanently connected to the internet, and a shared account is like a small part of a dedicated server.
Although cpanel admin is marvellous, some specific applications may not suitable for shared hosting, and should be checked out first. With costs being a major factor, shared hosting is the cheapest way to host your website. With a low price point, and is technically, the easiest option to maintain, the Hostgator shared plan is our most popular. Shared hosting costs less than dedicated hosting — some surveys put the cost of bare bones shared hosting from just a few dollars each month, and you can host several sites for the one price, whereas even middle-tier dedicated hosting can range upwards of $200 per month.

The shared plan is newbie friendly and the most cost effective way to host your site. Many hosting operations provide shared access, and prices range between free for a website full of ads, up to $50 for a high end reseller account, low end cheap hosts can offer 20mb of web space, right up to 50gb for power users. Consumers needing basic hosting, with cpanel back office, have a great entry package with shared hosting, Fantastico also allows scripts to run, like forums, blogs, and shopping carts. Cost savings are abundant when sharing servers, a typical server can host thousands of accounts.

Shared hosting have disk space, and bandwidth limitations, and most hosting providers have extensive reliability features in place. A really cheap hosting account with Hostgator will provide one full account, with subdomain access to allow you to host multiple websites on one account. Greater flexibility can be achieved by opting for a reseller account, each account has independent cpanel access, and you can even white label, and sell your own web space.

Netcraft websites rise by 1.56 million sites

December 24th, 2008

The results of the Netcraft survey are in for December 2008.

With responses coming back from 186,727,854 sites, with Apache hosting showing the largest gains at 2.47 million, although a good number of these are .pl sites, many are simply redirects, The planet.com is responsible for over half of this growth.

Since Yahoo has uncloaked its traffic server, the results now indicate some 1.68 million web sites appearing on the YTS. The YTS has always been known to run Yahoo services only, so we must assume that they are all Yahoo sites.

With a worldwide market share of a staggering 1.8%, nginx has shown this months 3rd largest rise, swelling its share by over 10%, nginx now boasts 3.35 million websites.

From active sites, the loser turned out to be Google, showing a downturn of 0.47% this could be attributed to Googles strict housekeeping policies. With Apache holding nearly half the market share, it was no surprise to see them top of the leaderboard, with Microsoft just behind at 33.21%, although they dropped slightly in the developers class.

Catch up with all the movers and shakers at the Netcraft website.

Hosting Blogs

December 16th, 2008

All You Need To Know About Blog Hosting
Apart from the chat rooms, instant messengers and electronic mails created for communication and dialogue beyond turf are the emerging innovations that help man build opportunities for interaction.  The need for a personalized and human interface of building online communities is slowly changing the technological landscape of the Internet.
Blogs / “weblogs” or blogging are the most popular form of Internet technology to people all over the world. These are updated posts, or personalized life snippets, of mundane or bizarre content in nature. For most, a “blog” is a personal, unedited, and authentic journal meant to be shared in an online community. A blog site is a place where bloggers can publish anything; thoughts, feelings, photos, special events, experiences, comments on issues and so on. It is more of an online diary with videos, links, documents, newsletters and opinions on just about any topics you are interested.
Blogs are made to welcome the insights and opinions of all and therefore, should not be written to sound intimidating and too formal. This kind of blog is a sure way to put off the readers. In the basics of blogging, conversational tone would be more appropriate to reach the desired audience.
Blogging is all about individuals reaching out to other individuals. Having a blog has its own set of advantages:

Freedom of Expression. If you want people to hear you out and give their own opinion, this is the best way to create a line of communication;
Networking is at its best. Having a blog is a good platform for exchanging genuine ideas from consumers to you as marketer of a certain product. Sound opinion and point of view is better than just showing the price.
Excellent advertising platform. Blogging is a new way to advertise products, a refreshing change from the traditional advertising outlets and it is cost-effective.
Gauging public opinion on products and services. The key is nice and catchy titles with new ideas presented in your content. This is an assurance of quick and repeated responses from your readers.  Blogs is an excellent spot for the exchange of ideas between the seller and the consumer. Good for measuring public opinion regarding services and products, even political and business matters alike.
Useful tool for internal communication. This will help your company to build a knowledge-based community of employees. Also good for harnessing employee relations and identifying human resource issues in advance.
Other benefits like search engine optimization (SEO) will help your blogs to be seen often by as many people as you wish. This is very good exposure for your products and services.
Many blog hosting services are available on the Internet, and with Wordpress being the most popular hosted blog solution, web host companies that offer fantastico win.

Fantastico is an integral part of cpanel hosting, and a few others. Once in the fantastico back office on your hosting account, you can install a Wordpress blog in 2 clicks of a mouse. There are other blog and CMS platforms available, all with fantastico hosting.

But the basic question is which one of the services will be the best to start off your business blog program? Business people are usually clueless to recent technological innovations which would help them maximize their marketing potentials. For these beginners, it is best to study first the services offered by blog hosts. An ineffective business blogging program may damage marketing opportunities instead of enriching them.
A company may decide to do the following depending on its capacity and needs: 1) Host their own blog service, 2) Pay someone else to host the service, or 3) Setup a “blog aggregator page” and ask the employees to select their blog hosting services individually. There are paid and free services available for individuals.

For business blogs, they are required to have the latest blogging features; if not, this will prevent them from maximizing their marketing, public relations and SEO potentials.
Keep in mind that blogs should have the following basic essentials:
COMMENTS.  Welcoming comments provide opportunity for dialogue. In business blogs, they are a good customer feedback mechanism. This helps develop better customer relations based from loyalty and trust. Blogging is an innovative way to converse with your customers.
TRACKBACK. This helps in maximizing company and product exposure. Through this service, consumers can get back to you for more posts and updates without the difficulty of locating you. If your blog is popular in a specific online community chances are links going back to your blog site are everywhere online, other blog sites or even websites.
CATEGORIES AND TAGS. These both help in classifying blog searches for ease of navigation and on site search. Categories act as libraries because it classifies posts by subject matter such as business, distance learning, e-commerce, online auctions, etc. Tags, help in the classification, especially in the blog search engine Technorati. Possible customers and new clients locate blogs about certain topics of interest by just clicking the tags.
RSS FEED. Really Simple Syndication is the feed from your blog that is sent out over the internet, and collected through the various newsreaders and aggregators.
If your company is to establish a business blogging program, considerable options should be made available by the hosting companies shortlisted for the services. Free blog hosting services are popular but they are much appropriate for individual online journals. Paid blog hosting services offer unlimited packages best for your company’s needs. You may want to suggest checking out some blogs that use the host first, read and examine their layout and design. Another important thing to consider is a reliable technical support the host has.
After, choosing the blog host, a team should be ready to plan the design and structure of the blog: The team should:
* create a style that meets the needs of the audience;
* establish an open, credible tone;
* schedule weekly updating of blog – ideally, a few times a week;
* include weblinks of other website and blogs;
* blog post should be in the “first person;”
* focus on the business blog objective; and,
* maintain an honest, engaging conversational quality.
Remember, whatever the look, style and content found on your blog is a reflection of you and your company.

Web Hosting Explained.

December 13th, 2008

Web hosting is the service that makes a web site viewable by other users on the internet.

Whenever you employ web hosting, you are renting disk space on a computer that is permanantly connected to the internet. The service provides individuals, organizations and users with online storage for storing, or displaying information, images, video, or any content accessible via the Web.

Web hosts are the companies that provide you with space on a server they own for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. Chunks of disk space a split up, and assigned to hosting accounts, ranging from a full rack, down to a small segment on a shared hosting account.

Web hosting requires good support, because, when you look in to the service, many companies offer nearly the same package. If you experience technical difficulties with your website you will want to get them fixed quickly. Therefore the best web hosts will ultimately be the ones with the best support and uptime. For businesses, good support makes their web presence or e-commerce possible on 24×7x365 day basis.

Hosting services provide space on their web servers that clients can “rent” to store personal web sites. Shared web hosting is the most widespread hosting service. Hosting should have no downtime, and your new hiosted website should be available for all to see 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The infrastructure behind the hosting is the speed of the servers, the amount, and speed of the memory in the web servers, and the size of the Internet backbone, allowing web traffic to flow freely.

From the customers viewpoint, you need to look at the server speed, the webspace, and the alloted bandwidth. Exceeding your bandwidth can cost you dearly, so read the small print on your hosting contract.

New users should steer clear of VPS (virtual private servers) and dedicated servers, the best hosting for the newbie is going to be a cpanel host, with great support on a shared web hosting account. Ensure your server is backed up frequently, and you have 24 hour access.

PHP Web Hosting, Dedicated Servers and Systems Tutorial

December 10th, 2008

PHP is a tool that allots a designated constant during runtime.

Initially, PHP web hosting and systems are dedicated servers. PHP is one of the top services that offers UNIX web hosting, Windows hosting, VPS, dedicated servers, wand proposes the resellers, web services and domain and e-mails to the Internet community. The services are more often than not around $10 monthly and the client receives anywhere from 5GB disk space or higher. The client also has FTP features, and sometimes 200GB data transferring time with over 500 mailboxes and 100MB MYSQL time.

PHP web hosting services and dedicated servers’ systems offer an assortment of features. The web hosting services often make available quality, powerful side-server script language that allots the users to create dynamic, interactive pages on a web site. The services and systems compete with Microsoft ASPs service, yet PHP web hosting and dedicated servers are widely employed. The services are the latest solution in web page development, which users can directly embed “HTML” codes. Syntax PHP web hosting and dedicated servers relate to “C.PHP” combined with Perl. The two unite often with the web server Apache and functions on a number of OS, or operating systems, such as Vista or Windows.

PHP has valuable tools that help to support the commonly used ISAPI as well as its functions on an IIS designed by Microsoft on an Operating System Windows platform.

Features:
PHP web hosting and dedicated servers combine the only one of its kind features to fabricate reliable usability action. The systems make use of:
· Zip capabilities
· Array actions
· XML Parsers Functional tools
· Strings
· Calendar
· Simple XML
· MYSQL (Computer standardized language that has an approximate structure of basic English that obtains information from web databases. SQL stands for “Structured query language)
· Miscellaneous capabilities

· Directory actions
· FTP (File Transfer Protocol clients and servers)
· HTTP
· LIB XML

Each individual function acts as a tool to endorse reliable, dedicated servers and to act as endorsement tools.

How does the Zip works:
Zip files from PHP web hosting and dedicated servers make it possible for users to read zipped files.

How is the zip installed?
The client must install the libraries before installing the zip. The libraries consist of ZZIPLIB, Zip PELC extensions.

How zip is installed on the Linux Systems:
To install on Linux you must select PHP 5 and the Zip command, as well as the Zip libraries must not be enabled. You then employ (-with-zip=DIR) which is the configure command that includes support for Zip.

How is zip installed on Windows?
Disable the PHP 5 and zip command from the default. This will initiate (php_zip.dll) as well as the library zziplib. You can download the necessary files at PHP hosting services and systems. Enable the php_zip.dll command within “php.ini.”

How is the PHP Extensions enabled?
To enable PHP extensions use PHP (extension_dir) settings within (php.ini) files. Set your directory from the extensions location, e.g. (extension_dir value is c:\php\ext.)

How do commands work:
to close zip files, type PHP “zip close?”
To close entry within zip files, type “zip entry close ()”
To return compress sized of entries within zip files, type “zip entry compressedsize ()”
To return compressed methods of entry from zip files, type “zip entry compressed method ()”
To return actual files of entry from zip files, use the “zip entry file size ()” commands
To return names of entry from files, use the command “zip entry name.”
To open entry in zip files to read, command, “zip entry open.”
To read open entry zip files, use the command “zip entry read ()”
OPEN zip files, use “zip open ()”
To read the following entries in zip files, “zip read ()”

This is one part of understanding PHP web hosting and dedicated server systems, but it is helpful when you want to get a jist of the subject matter.

SEO Tools Used With Web Hosting and Dedicated Servers

December 8th, 2008

Many people these days are cloning some of the popular web sites online in hopes that they will get their sites listed at the top ranks with Google, Yahoo, MSN, and other major search engines. Often they find web hosting and dedicated servers to help them clone the sites. Once the right web hosting and dedicated servers are discovered, they take web design to the next level. Some of the ways they are doing this action is listed below:
Step 1: Assess Google’s website thoroughly to find the best solution for building the website.
Step 2: After assessment and analysis is completed, the designer will immediately begin cloning the site.

Step 3: During the cloning process, the designer will continue assessing the site to ensure that all aspects of the web site are covered including Meta tags, RSS Feeders, Encryptions, spiders, crawlers, algorithms, et cetera. SEO and Keyword Density will be considered near completion of the web building process. Most builders use web hosting and dedicated servers to finish the job.

Usually, the web designer will consider various Internet marketing strategies and building tools for web promotion. Most times, they anticipate finishing the web pages in ten days or less. They often consider SEO marketing once the website is designed to inspire Google and other major search engines to choose their web pages for their page rankings. SEO strategies to consider include article submission, articles, anchor tags (Will be covered during construction process), keyword density articles, link building, (Will be covered during construction)
During the building process, the web designer will start with the home page and move ahead to each page until the web site is designed. The designer may consider adding a Link Page, Blog Page, Writing Center, News center, and some other attractions to clone the site. Often the designer will analyze and view other aspects throughout the building process. Yet, what tools do designers use?
Web designers will often use CEO or SEO Tools, such as:
· Link Development tools
· Productivity Tools,
· Spider Tools
· RSS, PPC, and CSS tools,
· Affiliate Management tools,
· Blogger Tools
· SEO Sitemap Tools,
· Directory Tools
· Link Popularity Tools

These web hosting and dedicated servers’ tools are free to use online in most instances for a trial period. Sometimes the designer will need to buy specialized tools to finish the job. However, the designer often uses web hosting tools rather than investing money into other tools needed to improve their web sites. They still need some other tools however, such as Adobe Reader and Adobe Photoshop. The Photoshop program helps the designer to create and add jpg. files to their web pages.
Adobe Reader is useful for adding white paper and other items to a web site, especially items that the web owners do not want people to copy. You can use Adobe Reader to create white paper or content that cannot be copied and which cannot be viewed unless the reader is given a pass code or password. Still, you need a good web hosting and dedicated servers to complete your tasks.
Web design is the major part of online business. This is because if you do not have a web site, you will not have means to promote your services or products. Therefore, if you do not have a web site now, it is time to check out web hosting and dedicated servers online.
